The 3rd Annual Shell Lake Triathlon – 1/3 mile swim, 15 mile bike, 3 mile run.
The time of year, location of this events, and this distances is all planned to help the multi-sport athlete start their competitive season. Whether training for the Ironman or participating in your first triathlon, we will make sure that you have an excellent experience!
This event is put on collaboratively with the Shell Lake Lions Club. They bring the whole town out to cheer!
THE LOCATION - Beautiful Shell Lake Wisconsin. Shell Lake is a friendly rural community of just over 1,300 people located in northwestern Wisconsin. One of the City’s most unique features is its beautiful 2,580 acre lake. Shell Lake is the State’s largest landlocked seepage lake. It is about 36 feet deep at its deepest; it is clear and clean; and it is an excellent place to fish, sail, swim, or just relax or do a triathlon
THE COURSE –
The Swim – The 1/3-mile swim takes place in beautiful Shell Lake . Wave starts will be utilized with the first starting at 8:00 a.m. Swim caps will be provided and required for all participants. Wet suits are recommended. Swim caps are provided and color-coded for each wave. Lifeguards will be on kayaks and boats for your safety. If you need to rest, let a lifeguard know. You will not be penalized for resting on a kayak. Wetsuits are allowed.
The Bike – 15 Miles though the country and around Shell Lake. Maps are on the website. ANSI or Snell approved helmets are required for all participants when on the bike course. The bike course is not a close course to traffic. All corners will have volunteers for directions and safety. Drafting is not allowed. No bikes will be allowed to be removed from the transition area until all biker are off the course
The Run – Maps are on the website. The 3.5-mile run is flat and fast. There are 2 aid stations on the run
Technical/Performance T Shirts to all Participants
**Only those who are registered by Thursday, July 23 are guaranteed to get their shirt on race day Registrations received on Friday and on race day will get a shirt but may have to wait and pick it up at FrontRunner, 1665 9th Street, White Bear Lake after Wednesday, July 29
AWARDS and CATEGORIES:
Awards will be presented to the top three men and women in each AGE GROUP: 19 and under, 20 – 24, 25 – 29, 30 – 34, 35 – 39, 40 – 44, 45 – 49, 50 – 54, 54 – 59, 60 – 64, 65 – 69, 70 and above. Other categories include Elite, Athena (women over 165 lbs) Clydesdale (men over 220 lbs) and Teams – all male, all female or of mixed gender.
Medals to top 3 in each category
All finishers receive a Finisher’s Medal
Trophies to top 3 overall Male and Female

Online Registration Closes at Midnight Wednesday, July 22. There will be race day registration. Paper registration will continue through race day. No registrations will be taken over the phone. Cash, check, VISA and Mastercard are accepted on race day.
RACE DAY INFORMATION
Friday, July 24 – 4:30 – 7:00 p.m – At the Shell Lake Park. Don’t worry if you can’t pick up your packet on Friday, you can also pick it up on Saturday morning before the race.
Saturday, July 25 –
6:30 am Transition area opens for bikes and gear
6:45 am Packet pick up opens – Race day registration is still available
8:00 am Wave 1 starts
Approximately 10:30 am awards – awards will begin when 75% of the participants are finished.
Here are the wave starts for 2013. These may and probable will change before the 2014 event – they were 3 minutes apart.
Wave 1=All Elites, Males 35 years and under and all Teams
Wave 2=Males 36 and over and Clydesdales
Wave 3 = All Females
The transition closes 15 minutes before the first wave is scheduled. At that point, everyone should head for the beach for a race meeting. For safety and security, only competitors are allowed in the transition area. Riding your bike is not allowed in the transition area. Everyone must wear an approved bike helmet. Bike helmets must always be buckled.
Timing/results info – You will receive a timing chip on an ankle strap in your race packet. This chip must be worn around your ankle (either one) and not around your arm, wrist, or on your bib strap. This chip will collect your times at 5 different split areas – The Swim, Transition 1, the Bike, Transition 2, and the Run, as well as a Finish time. We will be collecting this chip at the end of the race.
Please do not leave the venue with your timing chip still around your ankle. If you unintentionally do leave with your timing chip, please mail back in your packet envelope.
Please wear your bib number on the front of your shirt/jacket
